Digital Citizenship Program for Parents and Community - Dec. 15 @ 5:15p

Chadron Public Schools is pleased to offer Digital Citizenship to students and parents. On December 15, 2021, Karen Haase from KSB Law Firm will present the ins and outs of digital citizenship. There will be a session for Middle School and High School during the school day. We will also have a parent session. Do you want to know about the Apps and Social Media that your kids are using? Do you want to know about laws that govern social media use? Do you want to know how schools respond to these problems? We warn kids about the problems that crop up, but we cannot stress enough how technology keeps changing.

Karen Haase has a background as an educator. She and her firm are cutting edge in the practices of school law. KSB believes passionately that schools should use technology to increase engagement and student achievement. As a result, we work tirelessly to be a leading authority at how digital citizenship intersects with education. Sadly, all too often we see the negative side of digital communication when students, as well as adults, misuse technology. A digital citizen is a person who utilizes information technology in order to engage in society, politics, and government and who uses the internet regularly and effectively.

Parent Session will be held in the Auditorium at 5:15 on December 15, 2021.

The Standard Response Protocols Used for School Safety

After our recent use of 'Secure', I thought I'd provide a reminder of the six Standard Response Protocols used by CPS and most schools, colleges and many businesses internationally.  The SRP was developed by the iLoveUGuys Foundation

The “I Love U Guys” Foundation’s programs for crisis response and post-crisis reunification are used in more than 30,000 schools, districts, departments, agencies, organizations and communities around the world. They are created through the research-based best practices of school administrators, psychologists, public space safety experts, families, and first responders.

Many of you may recognize that "Lockout" was replaced with "Secure" due to common confusion of "Lockdown" protocols.   A brief description of the difference:  Secure is used when there is a potential threat outside of the school building while Lockdown is used when a potential threat may already be inside the school building.   Therefore the response to both are very different:  Secure involves business as usual inside the building with all exterior doors locked, while Lockdown will have students and staff behind locked and barricaded doors.

Feel free to visit the iloveuguys.org website or contact the school office if you would like to know more about our use of the Standard Response Protocols.

Extended Spring Break for Students - No School March 9th

Chadron Public Schools will extend the scheduled spring break by cancelling classes for all K-12 students on Wednesday, March 9th (originally a scheduled 1:30 dismissal day).  Chadron Public Schools will instead host a full day staff inservice training to host Dr. Melissa Sadin to train staff in the area of trauma informed schools.

Dr. Sadin has served as a special education teacher, a gifted education teacher, and a building administrator. Most recently she served as a director of special education. Dr. Sadin has been vice-president of her local School Board and is recognized as a Master School Board Member. She has conducted research on the perceptions of teachers working to create trauma-informed classrooms. Dr. Sadin is a published author and has produced numerous webinars on children with attachment trauma in schools. Currently, Dr. Sadin works as an education consultant and developmental trauma expert providing professional development to school districts, municipal service providers and parents. Nationally, Dr. Sadin is a highly sought after keynote speaker and conference presenter.

Dr. Sadin's most recent book, 'Teachers' Guide To Trauma - 20 Things Kids With Trauma Wished Their Teachers Knew' was co-authored with Nathan Levy. The Teachers Guide to Trauma provides an introduction to the neurobiological and psychological impact of early childhood trauma. This guide is designed to provide an overview of how trauma impacts learning and behavior in school. True stories and practical strategies help teachers and parents understand how best to meet the learning and behavior needs of children with trauma.

One act play “Crimes at the Old Brewery” takes the stage Friday

On Friday November 12th and 7 PM the Chadron High School one act team will present their performance of their competition piece “Crimes at the Old Brewery” by Tim Kelly.

The play is set in in the mid 1800s in a tenement house in New York City, where murderers, robbers, and assorted villains rule. Jack O’Lantern, the head of the criminals, rules the tenants. No crime is too much for him. Complications arise for this leader when the “Illustrated Police Gazette” plants a reporter within the Old Brewery that informs the public of the wretchedness of the building.

When Jack kidnaps the beautiful Irene Felton he makes a fatal mistake. The Committee for the Suppression of Crime and Vice decides the building must be destroyed. When Jack tries to solve the problem to his own benefit, the walls come tumbling down.

The Old Brewery is not a fictional place. It was a condemned brewery in 1837 and transformed into a tenement house. Some accounts state that over 1,000 people were crowded into its walls. The building was located in New York’s toughest crime area, the notorious Five Points District of Lower Manhattan. Public outrage and the “Illustrated Police Gazette” caused The Old Brewery to be torn down in 1852.

The play will cost $5 and will include an all you can eat dessert bar.

The one act team will also perform in Alliance at the Western Conference Meet on Saturday Nov. 13 and the Gering Bulldog Festival on Nov. 20. The team’s district competition will be Saturday December 4 in Gothenburg against seven other teams.

Scholarship Opportunities

 Dear Students and Parents,

As a school counselor I know that many of you have concerns about how to make a college education more affordable. Through a new program called RaiseMe, students can guarantee scholarships from 250+ colleges as early as 9th grade, making it easier to plan financially for school. RaiseMe has proven to be a great tool to motivate students in high schools throughout the U.S.

As an example:
• Get an A in a course ($100 - $1,000)
• Get a B in a course ($50-$600)
• Participate in a school club or sport ($25 - $250)
• And much more!

Chadron High School is among the first in the country to take advantage of this opportunity, which was launched with the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and U.S. colleges. Here are a couple of easy ways to support your students in using this unique tool:

1) Ensure that your student creates an account at www.raise.me

2) Encourage your student to regularly add good grades, community service, extracurricular activities, and other achievements to his or her RaiseMe Portfolio to earn micro-scholarships from colleges.

3) Visit www.raise.me/parents for more information. We hope using RaiseMe will make your student’s path to college both more fun and affordable.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Watson

This year's homecoming will be held on a Saturday due to the cross country team potentially not being able to make it due to state. We, the student council, also came to the conclusion that it will be easier to host a homecoming dance on a Saturday so that we will all have more time to get ready before the dance. We will also be able to host the dance earlier because of this slight change.

We look forward to homecoming week and hope you plan on attending as many activities as possible!

Parent-Teacher Conferences and Bonus Sessions on Sept. 16th 5:00-8:30

Chadron High School will host the fall Parent-Teacher Conference on Thursday, September 16 from 5:00-8:30 in the high school Commons.  We hope you can join us to meet your student's teachers and get updated on classroom happenings.

New this year, we have added two optional programs for parents and students to attend during conferences:

5:00 in Auditorium - Andrew Hunzeker will provide a free college preparation session.  This session is probably most valuable for parents of juniors or seniors.  Andrew will join us again later this year to host the EducationQuest Financial Aid program and to schedule FAFSA work times for parents of college-bound seniors.  This is a great chance to get to know him early and to ask questions or gain early information!

6:00 in Auditorium - Mrs. Watson and Mr. Mack will host a general parent information session and Q&A.  This session may be most valuable for parents new to our high school whether as freshman or transfer students but anyone can attend to ask questions.

Transition to College - Opportunities for Seniors

To the Class of 2022 from Mrs. Watson

Hello Class of 2022!

Wow, how time flies!  You are officially seniors and I look forward to working with you and your transition to the NEXT ADVENTURE in your last year at CHS!  As the school year kicks off I want you and your parents to know a few important items pertaining to what I like to call Senior Transition - the important process of moving on from a high school student and beginning your adult life.  Each month I will email out a "To Do List" to make sure you are not lagging behind important tasks.  I will also be hosting four Transition to College events in which I invite you and your family to the HS to eat dinner, and partake in college planning services and assistance for those students who are wishing to continue their education after this school year.  I will mail home a formal invite for these four nights tentatively:  September 30, Nov. 16, Jan 20th, and March 15th from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. in the HS Library - dinner and prizes included!

Parents - I can't help but brag about our amazing senior transition services we offer students here at the high school, I want you to know your students are in GREAT HANDS.  Currently students are working on scholarship and job resumes with Mr. Craig Nobiling and on scholarship essays with Mr. Willie Uhing. I cannot tell you how amazing these two educators are and how vital they are in this process and how selflessly they give their time to help assist students.

We will also work with students every 1:30 out Friday on what we like to call Senior Seminar Days.  On these days we do a little bit of everything: Apply to College, scholarship information seminars, career and resume speakers, gap year and internship opportunities, and even do a book study on the social and emotional aspect of moving on from high school (The Naked Roommate, also Parents Version, two amazing reads if you'd like your own copy at home!).

As helpful as I think we are at CHS with this process there are some things we simply CANNOT DO and need you as parents and students to fully engage in

 - Visiting top college choices
 - Having hard financial discussions and conversations about how much is saved for college, and what your family's financial situation looks like for assistance if any.
 - Choosing career paths and degrees FOR students (or talking them into one for that matter!)
 - Making military decisions

Last but not least Mrs. Tricia Berry and myself will serve as the senior class sponsors for this school year and will be in contact at later dates for to-do's that pertain to graduation and other events as they arise.

We look forward to working with the Class of 2022!  Our first senior seminar in school day is next Friday September 3rd during English and Government classes.  Be on the lookout for a mailing to sign up for Transition to College family events and prizes to win if in attendance.

September To Do's:
1.  Register for the October ACT.  Registration without late fee is due by September 17th!  To register go to www.act.org   Improving the ACT score is the single easiest way to increase your scholarship money!

2.  VISIT VISIT VISIT - As long as you let Mrs. Berry know in the main office that you are attending an official college or career visit with a parent you will be able to have as many excused days as needed to help you make this next decision!  Every website has a number you can call to set up a college visit.  I would prefer you do this at home with your parent!  You may need hotel rooms etc. Only you know what is a good time to set up an official visit.

3.  Start those financial conversations at home.  I know these are not fun - but essential!

4.  Apply to college!
