Extended Spring Break for Students - No School March 9th

Chadron Public Schools will extend the scheduled spring break by cancelling classes for all K-12 students on Wednesday, March 9th (originally a scheduled 1:30 dismissal day).  Chadron Public Schools will instead host a full day staff inservice training to host Dr. Melissa Sadin to train staff in the area of trauma informed schools.

Dr. Sadin has served as a special education teacher, a gifted education teacher, and a building administrator. Most recently she served as a director of special education. Dr. Sadin has been vice-president of her local School Board and is recognized as a Master School Board Member. She has conducted research on the perceptions of teachers working to create trauma-informed classrooms. Dr. Sadin is a published author and has produced numerous webinars on children with attachment trauma in schools. Currently, Dr. Sadin works as an education consultant and developmental trauma expert providing professional development to school districts, municipal service providers and parents. Nationally, Dr. Sadin is a highly sought after keynote speaker and conference presenter.

Dr. Sadin's most recent book, 'Teachers' Guide To Trauma - 20 Things Kids With Trauma Wished Their Teachers Knew' was co-authored with Nathan Levy. The Teachers Guide to Trauma provides an introduction to the neurobiological and psychological impact of early childhood trauma. This guide is designed to provide an overview of how trauma impacts learning and behavior in school. True stories and practical strategies help teachers and parents understand how best to meet the learning and behavior needs of children with trauma.

One act play “Crimes at the Old Brewery” takes the stage Friday

On Friday November 12th and 7 PM the Chadron High School one act team will present their performance of their competition piece “Crimes at the Old Brewery” by Tim Kelly.

The play is set in in the mid 1800s in a tenement house in New York City, where murderers, robbers, and assorted villains rule. Jack O’Lantern, the head of the criminals, rules the tenants. No crime is too much for him. Complications arise for this leader when the “Illustrated Police Gazette” plants a reporter within the Old Brewery that informs the public of the wretchedness of the building.

When Jack kidnaps the beautiful Irene Felton he makes a fatal mistake. The Committee for the Suppression of Crime and Vice decides the building must be destroyed. When Jack tries to solve the problem to his own benefit, the walls come tumbling down.

The Old Brewery is not a fictional place. It was a condemned brewery in 1837 and transformed into a tenement house. Some accounts state that over 1,000 people were crowded into its walls. The building was located in New York’s toughest crime area, the notorious Five Points District of Lower Manhattan. Public outrage and the “Illustrated Police Gazette” caused The Old Brewery to be torn down in 1852.

The play will cost $5 and will include an all you can eat dessert bar.

The one act team will also perform in Alliance at the Western Conference Meet on Saturday Nov. 13 and the Gering Bulldog Festival on Nov. 20. The team’s district competition will be Saturday December 4 in Gothenburg against seven other teams.
