CHS Significantly Reduces Chronic Absences 1st Quarter

We were excited to review attendance data from the first quarter of this year to discover the significant decrease in chronic absences when comparing to this time last year.

For our purposes, chronic absence is any student who has 10 or more unexcused absences in a semester. So, in viewing reports, students who have already missed 5+ days in a quarter would be in threat of being chronically absent by the end of the semester.

At the end of 1st quarter last year, we had 35 of our 307 (11.4%) students with at least 5 absences. At quarter's end this year, we only had 11 of 277 (4%) students with as many absences.  Further, students with 10+ absences in a quarter were cut in half compared to last year (2021 had 10, 2022 only had 5).

For years, we have shared with students that the #1 variable in determining whether they can attain a high school diploma with career or college readiness is attendance.  A student who attends school regularly is far more likely to successfully complete high school and to have more opportunities after graduation.

We want to thank all of the families and students of CHS for supporting our goal to decrease chronic absences and to value educational opportunities offered by our school!

CHS Seniors Participate in Apply2College Campaign

Seniors at CHS took a critical step in the college preparation process when they participated in a college application event on Friday October 21st with Mrs. Watson during a Senior Seminar Day at the school.

Chadron is one of several Nebraska high schools conducting events as part of the statewide Apply2College Campaign sponsored by EducationQuest Foundation. During the event, seniors received help with their college applications as well as scholarship applications.

Seniors at Chadron High School participate in "Senior Seminar Day" on early out Fridays throughout the course of the school year in Government and English IV.  Mr. Uhing, Mr. Nobiling and Mrs. Watson use this time with seniors to provide informational sessions and curriculum focusing on transitioning out of high school. During this time seniors also participate in college activities, transition events, and scholarship work time.

Nebraska’s Apply2College Campaign is part of the American College Application Campaign sponsored by the American Council on Education.

Chadron High Pay-Per View for Home Varsity Events

We're excited to announce that we'll be able to live stream home events from either gym and the football stadium.  We have installed three permanently mounted Hudl Focus cameras to provide viewing of high quality video from those three locations.  Any home event can then be programmed to show on the live stream at bit.ly/CardsTV.

Other special events may have live stream opportunities provided from a portable camera which currently includes softball.  Look for links from social media posts or view the upcoming scheduled events at bit.ly/CardsTV.

Home varsity events will follow the pay-per view costs listed in the graphic above.  All other non-varsity events, including middle school, freshman and JV will be live-streamed free of charge.  All proceeds from the home varsity events are directly funded back to CHS Activities which will support our teams and the sustainability of future live stream opportunities.

Hudl is a hardware and software provider that offers video and analytics platform for coaches and athletes to quickly review game footage to improve team play. The web-based system serves youth, amateur, and professional teams in many popular sports.  The video stream which is used for coaching analytics is then also provided to the public for viewing live contests.

Parent/Teacher Conferences & Financial Aid Program - Thursday, Sept. 15th

High School Parent/Teacher Conferences are Thursday, September 15th from 5:00 - 8:30p in the High School Commons Area.

This is an opportunity for parents and guardians to meet with teachers for feedback on how our school year is starting.  Most teachers will be located at tables in the Commons area, a few will be in nearby classrooms.  When you come in through the front doors, stop at the sign in table and we'll give you a copy of your student's teachers.

In addition to regular conferences, we'll host a Financial Aid Program at 6:00 with Andrew Hunseker from Education Quest. These programs are primarily intended for parents of juniors or seniors to provide FAFSA information for the transition to college, however, anyone is invited to attend.

Advice for College Bound Seniors from Mrs. Watson

From CHS School Counselor, Loni Watson

I've been answering a lot of the same questions lately so I thought I would post this in case you cannot attend the Financial Aid Program next Thursday night at 6:00p.

General Questions:

Is it too early to start applying to college?
- NO start applying now if you have extra time in class or at home!! I always call October my apply to college month so we are trending towards needing to start applications.  There are not many scholarships available so right now is an absolutely WONDERFUL time to apply to college.  Many college applications are FREE (2-year schools, Nebraska State Schools, Wyoming two-year schools, etc.) but some do charge up to $50.  If you are free and reduced make sure to click the button that says fee waiver needed.  Some schools like University of NE and University of South Dakota let you apply to more than one school with your application.  Example:  UNL, UNO and UNK all in one application!

Should I wait to apply until I have a better ACT score?
- NO NO NO NO Please apply now don't wait on ACT - those scores can take forever - once you have a better ACT score it will help the college to already have your admissions on file and they can just add the new score or even better yet some colleges may super score for you! Just make sure you pick 4 schools to send your ACT score to for free when you register so you don't have to pay later.

Do you have to make a new account for every college you apply for?
Yes :-)  And this is how schools will notify you if you receive scholarships and even admission!  Many schools are veering away from spending money on postage.  It is your responsibility to check these accounts often for To-Do Lists and deadlines!

How do I request my High School Transcript to be sent to a college?
EASY!  All you have to do is stop in Mrs. Watson's office and fill out a transcript request form or email me from your official school email where you'd like me to send your transcript (FERPA regulates I have your permission to send).  I will make sure it has an official seal and stamp.

How do I request my Dual Credit College Transcript?
Most colleges use https://www.parchment.com/ but I want to warn you that it costs money each time you send it.  Pro tip: Print your unofficial transcript off from the college you took classes (you can find this in the GRADES tab on your MYCSC or MYWNCC or other college account) this will work for admissions then later when you choose a school and send an official transcript (HS and College) you only have to pay one time for your college transcript.  There is NO GETTING AROUND THIS you have to send college transcripts before they register you for classes.

Senior Scholarship Folder
If you haven't saved and STARRED the scholarship folder in your Google Drive do this right now!  This folder is scholarship gold.  It is organized by month of due date.
Upcoming Dates
Sept. 13 - College Fair @ CSC 1:45 Permission Slip Required
Sept. 15 - FAFSA / Financial Aid Program w/ Andrew Hunzeker 6p Auditorium
Sept. 15 - P/T Conferences 5-8 p.m. HS Commons
Sept. 29 - Steps to College Program w/ Dinner (flyer attached)

Live Streaming Changes at CHS

We're excited to announce that we'll be able to live stream events from either gym and the football stadium.  We are in the process of installing three permanently mounted Hudl cameras to provide viewing from those three locations.  Any event, including middle school, JV or Varsity can then be programmed to show on the live stream at: https://www.team1sports.com/highschool/ne/?S=chadron which is also linked above on this blog and will be shared on the Chadron High School social media accounts.

Other special events will have live stream opportunities provided from a portable camera which could include softball, cross country or other events not in a gym or on the football field.  Look for links from social media posts for the streamed events.

We ask for your patience with our live streams while we're still waiting for shipment for cameras followed by install and training but we hope to be up and running from the permanent cameras soon.

Summer Upgrades to CHS!

We're very excited to reveal several summer upgrades to the Chadron High School facilities.  The summer projects include paining the gym, remodeling the boys locker room, and adding new heating and air conditioning units to the halls and classrooms on the East side of the building.

There's still work to do to enhance our facility this fall which will include adding murals and/or banners in the gym, installing fixed cameras for streaming sporting events, and expanding the HVAC install during the next two years so that all of our classrooms have updated heating and AC units.

Thank you to all the maintenance and install crews who have worked this summer on these projects!
