A&P Students Disect Sheep Brain

(Submitted by CHS Sophomore, Brooklynn Hoffman)

Anatomy and Physiology Brain Dissection

Mr. Bradley’s Anatomy and Physiology classes were able to have the experience of conducting a brain section in class. The students worked in pairs for this lab, and did the dissection on a sheep brain. The chapters that the students are currently learning have to do with the nervous system, more specifically the central nervous system, or the brain and spinal cord. The students followed lab directions which told them in what order and where they should be cutting. This allowed the students to identify different parts of the brain. The picture below is a picture that was taken during the lab and shows the brain cut directly down the middle. They were able to see the outside layer called the dura mater, and the main inside parts like the cerebrum, cerebellum, and the longitudinal fissure. Some more specific parts of the brain that were able to be recognized were the pituitary gland, different ventricles, the arbor vitae, and the students were able to differentiate between white and gray matter. The pituitary gland is in charge of hormone release, ventricles allow communication between different parts of the brain, and the arbor vitae brings information in and out of the cerebellum. These are just a couple parts of the brain that the students identified. The picture above was also taken during the lab and shows the front of the brain, or the cerebrum, and the longitudinal fissure that splits the brain into right and left hemispheres. This hands-on experience was not only an especially effective way to learn the parts of the brain, but also a learning experience that was different from reading from the textbook or taking notes.

Chronic Absences Continues to Fall

For the past couple of years, we have talked about decreasing chronic absences. We have referred to chronic absences as simply missing two school days per month.

Using that to estimate our current state of attendance, Chadron High School data shows a decrease of 75% in the number of students with chronic absences during the same time span one school year ago!

Congratulations to the students and families that support the importance of attending school every day!

Free Virtual K-12 Tutoring Program

Nebraska SMART has developed a temporary website, which allows parents to create an account and register their students for tutoring.

Nebraska SMART is a free virtual tutoring program for students in grades K-12. Teacher education candidates from Chadron State, Peru State, and Wayne State Colleges remotely tutor students in Educational Service Units 1, 4, and 13 through an online tutoring platform. This program is made possible by a Nebraska Department of Education grant awarded to the Nebraska State College System to launch a rural tutoring program.

Nebraska SMART’s official launch date to tutor students in grades K-12 is February 5, 2024. Tutoring hours are 3:30-6:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

The Nebraska SMART Video can be viewed for more information.

Parents who wish to gain access to tutoring must register their child(ren) by visiting www.nscs.edu/NebraskaSMART.

Parents must first create an account and register their child(ren). Once parents have created their account and added their child(ren), the student (or parent on their behalf) can schedule a tutoring appointment. Students can also join on-demand tutoring to be connected with the next available Tutor.

The Parent Guide provides steps for parents to register their child(ren), schedule a session, request on-demand tutoring, and more.

Students should provide homework for which they wish to receive help or topics that they would like to cover. When connected to a Tutor, students (or parents on their behalf) can share files with their Tutor. It is recommended that students (or parents on their behalf) have saved their homework to their computer prior to connecting to a Tutor.

The Nebraska SMART tutoring platform can be accessed via a laptop, desktop, or Chromebook. Please note that smartphones and some tablets are not currently supported by this platform. See below for Nebraska SMART’s technology requirements.

We look forward to serving your students through online tutoring!
