Dr. Winchester Awarded Excellence in Education Award in Chicago

“We are celebrating Dr. Caroline Winchester who has
served as the Superintendent of Chadron Public Schools
for the past nine years and students for 36 years as an
educator and leader. During this time, she has provided the
district with strong, servant leadership that is vision
centered, mission driven and goal-focused.  She has led
the district through difficult financial times, the
implementation of a district wide MTSS model, the adoption
and implementation of the Danielson Framework for
Teaching, and nearly two cycles of Systems Accreditation
through AdvancEd, now Cognia. Her reflective, inclusive,
collaborative and transparent leadership has served as an
example of exceptional leadership to the administrative team
(The A-Team) and to the entire Chadron Public Schools staff.

As administrators, we recognize the importance of the vision of Chadron Public Schools - Infinite
Education, Infinite Possibilities, and Opportunities for All - because it reminds us of the important
work that we do every day. We appreciate her experienced guidance as we strive to meet this
ideal by serving our students with passion, compassion and equity. We also appreciate her trust in
us as professionals, which she demonstrates through a collaborative decision making process
and by allowing us the autonomy to run the day-to-day operations of our schools. As Dr.
Winchester prepares to retire from public education, we are excited to celebrate this special
recognition from Cognia with her. On behalf of the teachers, support staff and students of
ChadronPublic Schools, the A-Team would like to congratulate and thank Dr. Caroline
Winchester for her record of outstanding service and exemplary leadership.”

The Chadron School Board recently accepted the resignation, due to retirement,
of Dr. Caroline Winchester, Superintendent of Schools. We are grateful for
Dr. Winchester's service to Chadron Public Schools and wish her well in her future

As the Board of Education prepares for the charge of hiring a superintendent,
we would value the input of parents and community members. You will have
the opportunity to offer suggestions pertaining to skills, qualities, or characteristics the
candidate might possess in order to be successful in his or her role as superintendent
and your views about the strengths of the school district and community.
The Nebraska Association of School Boards is assisting the board in the
superintendent search and has scheduled a visit to the district to engage
stakeholders. The board would like to invite you to attend an
information and input session with NASB Monday, October 28th
at 6:00 p.m. in the High School Library, to hear about the
process and ask questions.

1. First Quarter Report Cards are Heading Home TODAY!

Report cards will be handed out to students TODAY during their 4th block class.  Reminder, only quarter classes (Example, Speech, FCS 9, Health etc.) are official transcript grades and the rest will be averaged with quarter 2 grades for final semester official grades.  EEEK this is confusing right?!  See the next bullet and this week's Cardinal Cast for more information!

2. Cardinal Cast:  Report Cards, Transcript Grades, and Mrs. Watson's BEEF with Infinite Campus!

We promise it's not as boring as it looks.... Mrs. Watson only fell asleep one time while Mr. Mack was talking and that got caught on camera......
Takeaways from this episode:

1.  Learn what your student's report card REALLY MEANS.

2.  High School and Middle School are VERY different when it comes to grading, transcripts, and report cards.

3.  Mrs. Watson has some beef with Infinite Campus... learn why.

4.  Nebraska and CHS both require very specific credits for advancement and diplomas.
Check us out on iTunes and make sure you hit SUBSCRIBE!  We'd LOVE to have your feedback, Subscribe, Rate and Review, on iTunes!

3. Transition to College Monday October 21st at 6 p.m.

Our last Transition to College night for the Fall will be on Monday, October 21st at 6 p.m. in the high school library.  11th and 12th grade parents AND students are invited to attend for this one!

Come learn about how you can help your child transition to college and focus this week on PAYING FOR COLLEGE! This is a 3 part series this Fall and will continue on October 21st. Daycare and dinner will be provided!

Also friendly reminder ACT Dates and Registration deadlines (listed below).  It is NEVER too early to take an ACT!  9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders are all encouraged to give the test a shot and see how they do, statistically the more times you take the ACT the better you do!

4. Apply2College Week!

On October 28th the CHS Counseling Office will host a fun event called Apply to College Week!  During the entire week we will host college reps, complete fun college trivia, give away a massive amount of college prizes, wear cool college gear, and play college themed games.  We will have a two capstone events on October 30th for juniors and seniors where we visit Chadron State College!
Completing a college application can be daunting – especially if a student doesn’t have help with the forms.
That’s why EducationQuest sponsors Apply2College, an annual statewide campaign in which high schools conduct events during the school day to help seniors apply to college. This is part of a national campaign to change the lives of students.

5. Attend Our FREE QPR Training to Help Save Lives, Reduce, and Recognize Suicidal Behavior.

Cardinal Counseling - Oct. 11th 5 Bullet Friday

WELCOME TO 5 BULLET FRIDAY!

The Chadron High School Cardinal Counseling Department is excited to share our 5 Bullet Friday Newsletter for the 2019-20 school year!  Each week we will be providing readers with five facts, tips or tricks to help make the school year a success academically, emotionally, and socially!

If you do not wish to receive this email feel free to UNSUBSCRIBE using the button located at the bottom of this email.

1. First Quarter Deadlines are Extended Until Tuesday October 15th!

Students, do you have a few assignments to get in that might boost your quarter grade in a class?? Time to RUN to that teacher and get your work in by Tuesday!  With the snow day we have extended quarter grading deadlines until Tuesday, October 15th.  This means that you have a LONG weekend to get work done and IN before grades and report cards go out!

Reminder, at Chadron High School we average our quarter grades and report the two averages as a semester grade on our official transcripts.  For example if a student receives an 80% first quarter and an 90% second quarter the semester average grade would be an 85% and the corresponding grade (B) would be placed on the official transcript.  If a class is a quarter offering only (example:  Speech, Health, PE 9, ect.) then that quarter grade is final and goes directly on the transcript.

We will be handing out first quarter report cards to students to bring home after all grades are finalized.  Look for your student to be bringing these home Thursday or Friday of next week, we will send a REMIND to parents to let them know they should be coming home.

3.  LOANS, work study, student aid reports, and other college prep items that can get VERY confusing!

4.  Mrs. Watson quizzes Mr. Mack - True and False about paying for college, see how he does here!

3. Transition to College Monday October 21st and 6 p.m.

Our last Transition to College night for the Fall will be on Monday, October 21st at 6 p.m. in the high school library.  11th and 12th grade parents AND students are invited to attend for this one!

5. Mental Health Minutes:
Supporting Student Mental Health

This article caught my eye right away this week.  Sub "High School Student" for "College" and I see a lot of the same stuff in my office.

"Anxiety is the most common form of mental health challenge for college students with depression coming in a close second.
Students who have anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or any other type of mental health illness cannot choose to take a day off from it. Unfortunately, it does not simply just go away by taking self-care time, from seeing a therapist, or diving into their favorite hobby or activity. There’s no perfect formula to relieve symptoms all the time.

There’s a huge perception out there that most people can ‘choose to be happy’. For some, there is a residual dread from depression, anxiety, and stress which doesn’t allow them the ability to choose. Truth be told, most people don’t want to feel the impact of any of these things because it’s exhausting. And when humans are exhausted in general, our productivity drops significantly. Students continue to become harder themselves because they aren’t being as productive because of what they are dealing with – rinse and repeat."
Readers, THANK YOU AGAIN for joining us! Whether you are from CHS or another school, If you find it worthwhile please continue to SHARE. THE. LOVE (and the link).

4. 8 Apps to Delete from Your Teenagers Phone Immediately.

As I write this newsletter I just finished up speaking in front of CPS employees on dangerous apps and social media trends.  Not every app is a good fit for your teenager's smartphone. I've found several — from anonymous messaging apps to dating sites with lax age restrictions — that you should delete this instant.

5. Mental Health Minutes:
Build a Teen Stress Management Plan

Stress affects mood and causes physical discomfort. Stress management helps manage feelings and leads to growth, better health, and even improves relationships.

GREAT resources here at the Center for Parent & Teen Communication on building a teen stress management plan.  Check out more at https://parentandteen.com/teen-stress-management-plan/
